SQ3R Reading Strategy

The SQ3R is a reading strategy that is often used by students when studying.  We all know that studying isn’t the most fun thing for students to do but the SQ3R strategy is a way to help us understand what we have to learn.  For me studying wouldn’t top my list of things to do but I think that this strategy is a good way of helping.  SQ3R stands for survey, question, read, recall and review.
Survey is about having a quick glance over what it is you’re going to read.  By just looking at the title you can get a better idea of what it is you are going to do.  Also look out for headings and what these are to give you a better idea of what this piece of writing is about.
Question is all about asking yourself questions about what you have just read. Do you understand it? Do you agree with it? When asking the questions you will be able to see yourself learning the information you have read and it also gives you the chance to see what sections it is that you may be finding difficult.
Read the text next.  When reading through it make sure you keep the questions that you thought of in mind and see if you can answer them.
Recall what you have just read.  See if you can answer the questions that you have thought of from your memory.  If not go back and re-read the text.
Finally is the review section, this is all about talking about what you have just read.  You can write more notes or talk about it.  Asking other people to help you by asking questions is also another way of helping you to understand and learn what you have just done.
